Today in literature

Sarah Palin is just the gift that keeps on giving, isn't she? I don't know about you, but I just can't wait for the publication of Going Rogue: An American Life. (And wow, Sarah. Way to write! You must have had lots of time on your hands, what with skipping all those speaking engagements you'd booked.) It's sure to be a treasure trove of amazing insight into a singularly brilliant political mind.

[Editorial note: To head off potential criticism from some quarters that Former Governor Palin is old news, I would argue that she is still plenty relevant.]

However, what I'd like to highlight is this shout-out from Former Senator Rick Santorum (R -- Pleistocene), which came to my attention thanks to Isaac Chotiner's amusing post at The Plank:
Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R., Pa.) tells NRO that he looks forward to reading former Alaska governor Sarah Palin’s upcoming memoir, Going Rogue: An American Life, once it is published on November 17. “Sarah has jumped onto the scene and has been hammered by the mainstream media,” says Santorum. “This is an opportunity for her to show a more thoughtful side. She has a gift for prose. Hopefully that comes across.”
First of all, I'm curious how one's "gift of prose" can "come across." Either one's prose is gifted, or it isn't.

But my favorite aspect of the quote is how this is an "opportunity for her to show a more thoughtful side." You know what would have been an even better opportunity for her to show an iota of thoughtfulness? A glimmer? A soupcon?

The 2008 campaign.

  1. Yeah, if only Ms. Palin had been thoughtful, like Joe "Gaff-O-Matic" Biden, during the campaign.

And the Vincent/Palin book is now #3 on Amazon. Do You remember what the Ayers/Obama "Dreams from my Father" title ranked at the peak?

  2. she better marshall those dollars wisely because she is having a hard time booking speaking engagements. She is a blitering idiot, and more and more Republicans are becoming aware of this, which is why she can't book any speaking engagements. Most of her sales of this book are bulk sales by conservative organizations, most true Palin supporters are waiting for the comic book edition.

  3. Not to dump on poor Sarah, but four months to write a book? The average time for a decent thoughtful writer is a little over a year. This will be quite the tome. I imagine it will sell well. The publisher had ordered one million copies. I cannot imagine the low-life intellectually challenged morons, who will purchase and read this tripe.

  4. Uhm, John, what's your point? That a lot of people are interested in reading what Sarah Palin "wrote"? This is not news to me.

  5. My point? Ms. Palin is at least as intelligent and thoughtful as Mr. Biden, who is one heartbeat from the Presidency today. And Ms. Palin is honest enough to be open about using a ghostwriter, unlike the current occupant of the White House. And the story of her rise from small-town mom to crusading governor is at least as interesting as Mr. Obama's rise to enter Harvard Law School.

UJ, the publisher ordered 1.5M copies in the first printing, and there seems little doubt it will need additional press runs. And the four months were what elapsed between the contract signing and publishing date. I haven't heard how long Ms. Palin may have been working on the book prior to inking a deal with HarperCollins. Do you have a cite?

    No, John, she really isn't.

  7. Unlike you, Charlie, and your fellow obscenity lovers I can provide cites for my number from mainstream sources.

Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins, has commissioned a huge first printing of 1.5 million copies.

USAToday, MSNBC, and other mainstream sources confirm the 1.5M first printing as fact. Now, what was it that you were saying?
