On special occasions

Wednesdays are my day off with the Better Half, and so I am enjoined from wasting my time with such frivolous things as posting to the blog. There are, however, events that warrant a small suspension of the rules.

From the KJ:

Gov. John E. Baldacci today signed into law LD 1020, An Act to End Discrimination in Civil Marriage and Affirm Religious Freedom.

“In the past, I opposed gay marriage while supporting the idea of civil unions,” Baldacci said. “I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage.”

I must admit that I was not nearly as optimistic about this as it turns out I should have been. I had less faith in Maine's elected leaders than they deserved. I am indescribably happy, as was evident to the people in downtown Damariscotta who saw me jumping up and down after a friend called the Better Half to share the news. And I am grateful to Gov. Baldacci for making this just, brave and historic decision.

On a small, gleeful little note, as of this posting I have scooped Andrew Sullivan.
